Planning your first solo trip to Bali can be an exciting adventure! When you feel the call to visit the Island of Gods, it’s an invitation that keeps knocking until you answer.
Bali is not just a destination; it’s a place where inner transformation and healing naturally unfold. From my own experience, I can tell you that the Bali Calling is a journey in itself—a beautiful process that begins the moment you decide to go.
I remember my first time coming to Bali after my Southeast Asia trip in 2016. Back then, I was traveling through couch surfing (when it was still all about backpacking and connecting with locals, haha).
Couch surfing was the perfect way to meet Indonesian friends and truly connect with the local community. It made me feel at ease in a country I was just beginning to discover.
I understand that planning your first solo trip can feel like stepping out of your comfort zone. You’re responsible for your own plans, and you have to rely on your intuition. But that’s the beauty of it—it’s an empowering experience that allows you to grow and connect with yourself on a deeper level.
To help you on your journey, I’m happy to share some tips and reminders for your first solo trip to Bali:
1. Trust Your Intuition: Bali is a place that encourages self-discovery. Trust your gut instincts, and don’t be afraid to explore off the beaten path.
2. Connect with Locals: Whether through local tours, workshops, or simply striking up a conversation at a café, connecting with Balinese people will enrich your experience and help you feel more at home.
3. Embrace the Spirituality: Bali is known for its spiritual energy. Take time to visit temples, participate in local ceremonies, and embrace the island’s sacred vibe.
4. Take It Slow: Don’t rush through your trip. Bali has a unique pace, and the best way to experience it is by slowing down and savoring each moment.
5. Stay Open to Transformation: Bali has a way of bringing about change—whether it’s through a yoga retreat, a visit to a healer, or simply spending time in nature. Stay open to the possibilities.
Book your accommodation at a Balinese Homestay
Looking for an authentic experience as a solo traveler in Bali? Staying at a Balinese Homestay provides you with an authentic glimpse into local life and Balinese culture. This is the most easy way to interact with Balinese families and Balinese way of living. Which you would normally not have when you stay in a hotel. By choosing to stay at a Balinese homestay, you also directly support the local community.
Last year (2023) I stayed 3 months with Pak Dewa and his family. (see photo) This is the place where I also bring people for Canang Making workshop, right in the village. These people are like family for me.
Embrace solo adventures to trust your own intuition
Embrace solo activities such as visiting temples and exploring rice terraces. Engaging in solo adventures allows you to immerse yourself fully in Bali’s Beauty and culture, while also helping you learn to trust your intuition and the way you navigate this island.
Renting a motorbike and driving around without a plan also adds to the perfect adventure. Bali is a safe place for solo travelers and when you need help, the Balinese are more than happy to assist you.
Release expectations and Embrace spontaneity
It’s good to plan ahead and do your research about Bali and which places to travel to, but when you are traveling you will realise that sometimes things don’t always go as planned. Stay open to release expectations and let yourself be guided by your intuition on where to go and which places you need to visit. Embrace spontaneity – release the expectations.
