Every time Galungan & Kuningan approaches, I feel a deep sense of reverence for life. If you’ve ever been in Bali during this magical and transformational time, you’ll know what I mean: the air feels different, almost charged with a special energy. The streets are adorned with towering penjors, each one a beautifully crafted offering of gratitude to the divine.
Usually, I am also undergoing a transformation on an individual level. Whether I like it or not.. As these Galungan days unfolds, I find myself reflecting on my own journey: the challenges I’ve faced, the lessons I’ve learned, and the growth I’ve experienced. The atmosphere of celebration serves as a backdrop for my own inner work, inviting me to release old patterns and embrace new beginnings.
What is the spiritual significance of Galungan and Kuningan?
The spiritual significance of Galungan and Kuningan is deeply rooted in Balinese Hinduism, reflecting themes of balance, renewal, gratitude, and the connection between the physical and spiritual realms. Galungan represents the triumph of dharma (good) over adharma (evil). It is a reminder of the moral and ethical values that guide our lives. These days emphasizes the importance of aligning one’s actions with principles of goodness, compassion, and integrity. Kuningan marks the end of the Galungan festivities, signifies the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. It is a time to reflect on the impermanence of life and the ongoing journey of the soul. The act of saying goodbye to the ancestral spirits during Kuningan is also a reminder of the transient nature of existence and the importance of living a life of purpose.
Important lessons from Galungan
Inner Victories
Galungan teaches us that every day we have the opportunity to choose good over evil: not just in a mythical sense, but in our own personal battles.
Whether it’s overcoming insecurities, self-doubt, releasing old fears, or simply choosing kindness over judgment, each small victory is a step toward living in alignment with our most authentic self.
It’s a reminder that no matter how challenging the journey, light will always find a way to shine through the darkness.
Honor Your Roots: Don’t forget where you came from
The Balinese go to great lengths to honor their ancestors during Galungan, showing us the importance of remembering where we come from. Whether it’s our family, mentors, or the experiences that have shaped us, taking time to express gratitude for these roots is a beautiful practice. It connects us to our heritage.
The Power of Community
One of the most heartwarming aspects of Galungan is how it brings people together. Families reunite, communities gather in temples, and everyone shares in the joy of the celebration.
It’s a testament to the power of community and the support systems we all need. No matter where you are, I encourage you to nurture the connections around you, to give and receive support, and to remember that we are all stronger together.
In this time of celebration, I embrace the lessons of Galungan: the importance of gratitude, the power of community, and the necessity of renewal.
I invite you to reflect on your own journey during this sacred time, to consider how you can honor your transformation and the connections that enrich your life.
Thank you for being part of this journey with me. I look forward to sharing more about Bali, its Sacred Ancient traditions, and how we can all bring a little bit of its Bali magic into our everyday lives.
With love and gratitude,
Jessica Francis
