In today’s blog, we are going to give an introduction about Canang Sari, a beautiful tradition in Balinese culture. Canang Sari is something you definitely can’t miss when you visit the Island of Gods.
Significance of Canang Sari
The word “Canang” refers to the tray or basket used to hold the offerings, while “Sari” means essence.
Together, Canang Sari symbolizes the essence of selfless giving. The Balinese believe that by making these daily offerings, they maintain a balance between the seen (sekala) and unseen (niskala) worlds, ensuring harmony, peace, and prosperity.
The Process of Making Canang Sari
Creating Canang Sari is an art that requires patience, skill, and a deep sense of devotion. It is an art form that is passed down from ancestors to the present generation, preserving the rich cultural heritage and spiritual traditions of Bali. The process usually begins with crafting the small basket from palm leaves. Next, flowers of different colors are beautifully arranged within the basket. Each flower has a symbolic meaning:
- White flowers, placed in the east, symbolize Iswara, the God of peace.
- Red flowers, placed in the south, symbolize Brahma, the God of creation.
- Yellow flowers, placed in the west, symbolize Mahadeva, the God of protection.
- Blue or green flowers, placed in the north, symbolize Vishnu, the God of preservation.
After arranging the flowers, items such as rice, betel nuts, and a piece of pandan leaf are added to the offering. Finally, the Canang Sari is topped with an incense, which is lit as the offering is placed at various locations around homes, temples, and businesses. Observing the creation and offering of Canang Sari provides a unique insight into the spiritual life of the Balinese people. It’s a reminder of the importance of gratitude, the beauty of daily rituals, and the deep connection between humans and the divine.
