Bali: a place where the seen and unseen meet each other in harmony, offering beautiful teachings for anyone open to its wisdom. This sacred island, with its green landscapes, ancient traditions, and spiritual energy, has been a powerful teacher for me. The Balinese believe deeply in the unseen forces that shape our world, and they live in rhythm with these energies through daily rituals and ceremonies.

What is Sekala and Niskala?
In Balinese belief, Sekala represents the tangible, physical world: the things we can see, touch, and interact with. It includes nature, our bodies, our homes, and everything within the material realm.
Niskala, on the other hand, represents the unseen. The energy, spirits, ancestors, and forces that influence life beyond what our eyes can perceive. It is the realm of intuition, emotions, and divine connection, where ceremonies and prayers act as bridges between the visible and invisible worlds.
The Balinese live in constant dialogue between these two realms, ensuring that their actions in the seen world are in harmony with the unseen forces.
Offerings, prayers, and sacred rituals are not just acts of devotion but ways to maintain balance and invite blessings into their lives.
Why this matters
In Western culture, we often prioritize what we can see, measure, and control, dismissing the unseen aspects of life as secondary. Yet, in doing so, we may lose touch with something essential: the intuitive wisdom, energetic flow, and deeper spiritual connection that bring true harmony.
When we acknowledge the unseen, we become more aware of how energy moves through us. We learn to trust our intuition, to honor the emotions that guide us, and to cultivate a deeper relationship with the forces shaping our lives. Bali teaches us that everything carries energy, and when we move with intention: whether through ritual, meditation, or simple mindfulness. We can align ourselves with the natural rhythms of life.

My Personal journey into the Unseen
I have had the privilege of staying in Balinese villages, where I was invited to sit in ceremonies and truly feel into the spirit of Bali. These moments were beyond words—watching the prayers, sensing the energy shift, and even witnessing people enter trance states. I have seen things that defy logical explanation, things that made me realize how much exists beyond the veil of what we call reality.
Bali has been my greatest teacher when it comes to navigating the unseen realms while staying grounded. It has shown me the importance of discernment, of listening beyond the noise, and of trusting the wisdom that flows beneath the surface. These experiences have not only deepened my understanding of energy and spirit but have also profoundly shaped my own personal growth.
How we can integrate these teachings into our own lives
Even outside of Bali, we can embrace the wisdom of Sekala and Niskala in simple yet meaningful ways:
- Create Ritual in Everyday Life – Start your day with an intentional practice, whether it’s lighting a candle, setting an intention, or offering gratitude.
- Honor the energy around you – Be mindful of the energy in your home, your body, and your relationships. Regular cleansing, whether through meditation, smudging, or time in nature, helps maintain balance.
- Trust your intuition – The unseen world speaks in whispers. Slow down, listen, and follow the subtle nudges that guide you toward alignment.
- Engage with nature as a Sacred Force – Like the Balinese view water as sacred, recognize the natural elements around you as powerful allies for healing and clarity.
